Fire department down to one truck

A transmission problem with a 21-year-old fire truck has paralyzed the Benton Fire Department.

Several months ago the department lost its aerial apparatus due to hydraulic issues and now engine 802, a 1995 model, is in the shop for mechanical repairs. That leaves the department with just one operable truck – engine 801, a 2005 model.

Were down to one truck, which means were answering in town calls only,” said Fire and Police Commissioner Don Storey, who will bring the issue up for discussion at todays City Council meeting, which begins at 6 p.m. at City Hall – the final meeting at West Main Street before moving to South Main Street, in the former Benton Grade School District administration office. The first meeting in the new City Hall is set for Aug. 22.

They took the truck down to West Frankfort for a mutual aid call and it quit on them (fire personnel) on the way back,” Storey said, reporting the truck has been taken to Mt. Vernon Truck Body for repairs.

Meanwhile, fire personnel were supposed to be taking a trip to Texas to view a used aerial truck being sold online. That trip will not take place until later this week, leaving the department vulnerable for two-story structure fires.

If that doesnt pan out, well try to get another truck. Were looking at all of our options,” Storey said.

Storey will also discuss the new police station. Commissioners approved the construction of the station at the former Scout cabin last month. Storey said city officials have met with an architect and contractor.

I wanted to see if we could start construction in September. If we have to put it up for bid, its going to take a lot longer,” Storey said.

Commissioners will also consider a new hire for the police department. The department has a vacancy, created by the recent termination of Kelly Owens.

Commissioner Dennis Miller is offering discussion and possible approval of a plat for a proposed I-57 Airport Business Park, according to the meeting agenda; and there will be a discussion and/or approval of an estimate provided by J.W. Reynolds Monument company to move monuments on city property.

Mayor Fred Kondritz is expected to accept the resignation of Civic Center Board member Jim Page and recommend Mike Hoffman to fill the vacancy.
