CHRISTOPHER – For the second time in three weeks, high school football took a hit Friday night – lightning strikes that interrupted action on the gridiron.

Edwards County was leading Christopher/Zeigler-Royalton 7-0 at the end of the first quarter when the officiating crew halted the game due to lightning in the area. The game will be picked up at 6:15 p.m. Monday, according to an announcement from the public address announcer.

Edwards County scored on its second possession with 2:14 left in the second quarter on a 50-yard run by sophomore running back Cade Rivers. Max Bare added the point-after kick.

On the previous possession, CZR had driven down to the Lions’ 18 but surrendered the possession on downs. Two 15-yard completions from quarterback Cam Newton to Derek Mueller and Steven Anderson, respectively, were highlights during the drive.

Defensively, Newton intercepted a pass on Edwards County’s first possession, leading to the good field possession at the Lions’ 40, resulting in the aforementioned drive.

Both teams are 0-2 and looking for their first victory of the season when the game resumes Monday at Spann Field. CZR will visit Black Diamond conference powerhouse Eldorado on Friday.
