Mayor Fred Kondritz said the city will be dressed up in purple June 10 for the annual Franklin County Relay for Life.
This year's event will be from 4 to 11 p.m. at the Benton Civic Center.
"The thing that is impressive here is the American Cancer Society raises $152 million per year. We've all been touched by cancer," Kondritz said about signing a Relay for Life declaration at Monday's city council meeting.
Bates said organizers hope the new location -- recent events have taken place in West Frankfort -- will attract a decent crowd.
"We're hoping for a really big crowd this year," Bates said. "We know there are a lot of other events that day, but I would challenge everyone to come out that day, with the opening ceremony at 4 p.m."
Bates said the luminary ceremony will be held at 9 p.m.
"Everyone knows somebody who has battled cancer. It's not 6 and 7 degrees away, it's 1 degree away," she said. Bates presented the mayor with a purple ribbon to signify the city's support of the event.
In other business, commissioners approved purchase orders of $55,500 for two 2017 Ford police cruisers; $977 for materials to build a fence around the generator at the police station; and $6,525 for updated LED lighting at city hall.
